The Power & Control Wheel shows tactics used to maintain power and control in an abusive relationship. People may be violent for a number of different reasons, but the most widely accepted explanation is that violence is a tool people use to get what they want. Violence seems to be a learned behavior which leads some to hope that with help, violent people can learn to think and behave in a different and healthy way.
The forms of abuse listed below usually lead to violent or physical abuse. Every relationship is unique but here are some of the common power and control methods used by abusive partners to get what they want from their victims:
